Alongside the general toxic effects of alcohol has on cells in the body, heavy and prolonged use of alcohol can lead to more serious psychological damage such as: depression, aggression, dependency and impaired judgement, all of which have detrimental effects for an individual’s capacity to take care of dependants. These tests are to be used by the UK courts to assist with the determination of parental capacity within child care proceedings.

It is now possible to assess people who have been drinking heavily or using alcohol regularly (defined as drinking at least 60 grams of alcohol per day) on a routine basis for a minimum of two or three weeks. The most accurate form of detection via blood is to perform a Liver Function Test (LFT), which assesses the variation of the liver-produced proteins in the blood in conjunction with a Carbohydrate Deficient Transferin (CDT) test that looks at specific biochemical markers for alcohol consumption. These blood tests coupled with the latest ‘patent pending Hair Alcohol Test’ by Trimega Laboratories, will give you an accurate indication of your client’s alcohol dependency.
